The Employment Court has held that an employer cannot escape New Zealand law by arranging for a worker to pay for a New Zealand job overseas. That answer should have been obvious. It was not, and the delay has mattered.

Expanded citizen’s-arrest powers were supposed to give retailers another weapon against crime. Now Police are warning people that intervention can be dangerous, while the security industry says guards may need specialist training, body cameras and stab-resistant vests. That raises an obvious question: what exactly has Parliament handed ordinary New Zealanders?

Two fresh ERA decisions make the same point: a genuine business downturn does not excuse a bad redundancy process. Employers still need real consultation, proper redeployment consideration, and fair procedure.
